A Storm is Coming….
Imagine you stepped in a time machine, spun around a few times, and stepped out of the contraption into 1998.
It seems like only yesterday.
I was gawky, undersized 6 Year old. It was the year of the Football World Cup, the first one I remember. ‘Le Bleus’, led by ‘Zizou’ brought France their first victory. It was the year when another scrawny kid with a scar on his forehead because the most famous person in the world. It was also the year that my Dad would come home and tell us about this new idea people were chirping about. They called it the ‘World Wide Web’. What a grandiose term, I thought. But months passed, and the chatter seemed to be getting louder and louder.
If you were one of the lucky ones, it wasn’t long until you could access a PC that had access to the Internet.
My first experience was at school, we turned up one term to find that the class Information Technology, IT, had been added to all our weekly calendar. Most of those classes were spent practicing our ‘touch-typing’. A programme would time you as you re-typed the sentences that appeared on the screen. All through the exercise, your fingers and the keyboard beneath them were hid from view by a wooden platform.
Soon after, bulky desktop PC’s began to migrate to home. The dial-up process would take 15 mins at least, and all the process the square monitor would screech like an imprisoned animal, struggling in futile desperation. If you were lucky enough to get past this stage, you weren’t quick out of the woods yet, knowing that if you grandmother decided to pick up the landline phone at any point during the session, you were cut of, back to square one, with no choice but to start all over.
That primitive technology has come a long way since. Only 20 years later, it has stratified and pervaded every aspect of our lives. Who would would have thought that clunky desktop PC, would transform into a sleek device that I could slip into my pocket.
It all happened so seamlessly.
In the last few months, hungrily consuming the updates on Blockchain technology and all its associated applications, and I can’t help but feel like history might be repeating itself.
The mania around Bitcoin, the rise in Decentralised Finance and the bubbling NFT Market really seem to demonstrate to me that the the underlying technology is now spilling over into the mainstream.
At the same time, the increasing distrust in our institutions, both societal and financial can’t help but push this demand for a decentralised structures.
A storm certainly does seem to be coming.
In either case, unlike the rise of the Internet when I was but a helpless child tethered to my mother, this time I want to be see history taking place in clear view.
And that right there is my reason to start this blog. To put ‘Skin in the Game’ as it were.
I’ll be writing about all things Blockchain, Crypto, NFT and DeFi.
